Students have a lot of options when it comes to secondary schools. We encourage students and families to find the best fit.
The application window for secondary schools of choice is January 1 - 31, 2021. Applications close at 11:00 p.m.
Secondary schools of choice include Big Picture, CHOICE Academy, Raisbeck Aviation High School the new Maritime High School and the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at MRHS.

Your Neighborhood School
All neighborhood schools offer a variety of challenging coursework, taught by highly-skilled teachers, with electives to enhance the learning experience. We encourage you to get to know your neighborhood school—explore its website and all it has to offer.
Big Picture Middle and High School
Serving grades 6-12 — application required
Big Picture starts with your interests and tries to build the whole curriculum around that. You’ll create your own individualized learning plan, and most of your learning will happen through projects. You’ll work closely with a small advisory group that stays together multiple years, and two days a week you’ll pursue internships in real world settings related to your interests.
CHOICE Academy
Serving grades 6-12 — application required
CHOICE Academy provides a small, welcoming learning environment with rigorous and relevant curriculum in a family-style school setting. The school offers traditional instruction in the morning with opportunities for off-site, independently-developed electives in the afternoon.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
Serving grades 9-12 — IB application required
An internationally-recognized, college-prep program emphasizing the development of independent learners, critical thinkers, and strong writers with a global perspective. This program is located at Mount Rainier High School.
Maritime High School
Serving 9th-grade in 2021-22
Maritime High School is a new small high school opening in September 2021. The new school will connect students to project-based learning centered on the environment, marine science and maritime careers.
Raisbeck Aviation High School
Serving grades 9-12 — application required
Raisbeck offers a specialized, hands-on, project-based learning curriculum focused on aviation and aerospace related content. Students who are motivated to pursue a science, technology, engineering or math education and a career pathway related to aviation, aerospace and space exploration are ideal candidates.
Highline Virtual Academy
Serving grades 6-12
The virtual academy is a flexible learning model that provides opportunities for self-paced learning. Instruction is centered around rigorous learning and high expectations implementing a guaranteed and viable curriculum, including academic and social emotional skills.More details will be available soon.

Applying
The application window opens January 1 and closes on January 31.
Students and families can use our online application site SchoolMint to complete and submit an application for schools of choice.

Space is limited. A lottery process is used when applications exceed capacity. The lottery will take place on March 2. Families will be notified via SchoolMint on March 2 whether students are accepted or placed on a waitlist. Full lottery results, including waitlist order will be posted as a news story on the district and choice school websites on March 3 by end of day.
